Mass distillation, also known as batch distillation, is a process used to separate components of a mixture based on their different boiling points. This method is widely used in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, in the production of perfumes, and especially in the production of alcoholic beverages, such as whiskey and rum.
- Heterogeneous Mixture: Mass distillation deals with mixtures where the different components have different boiling points.
- Heating and Vaporization: The mixture is heated in a single container, causing the component with the lowest boiling point to vaporize first.
- Condensation: The vapors are then cooled and condensed into a liquid, which is collected separately.
